Today has been a lovely, quiet day. The radio is set on soft, environmental music, the parrots have been uncharacteristically contented, and the phone hasn’t rung once. Not a single jingle. No one has called me this entire day.
Because there is no phone in the house. Last week we disconnected our land line. Why keep paying for a house phone when we both have cell phones? Not to mention “Skype” on our computers with the web cam, several e-mail addresses, Facebook and MySpace. How many lines of communications does a family really need?
Of course, cell phones only work when one turns them on, and even then, one does need to be in reasonable proximity to the device. Which today, I am not.
It wasn’t intentional, honestly. I’m developing the habit of keeping my cell phone in my jeans
pocket, or at least in my purse, or in the dog’s harness pouch or on the desk right next to my cordless mouse. I wasn’t even aware that my electronic umbilicus was detached until my neighbor came to the door to tell me about it.
Apparently, MDH attempted to call my cell phone from his cell phone on his way into town, as is his habit. (While stopped in traffic, of course. He’s getting much better with the whole no-cell-phone-while-driving thing.) Then instead of my melodic voice answering the cell phone, he heard the actual melodic ringing of said phone coming from my purse that had fallen under the stack of – well, you don’t need to know exactly what is piled in our back seat, but my bag containing the cell phone was beneath it. Imagining that I would dissolve into a helpless panic due to lack of telephone access for an entire day (which he himself would certainly do), he considerately and immediately phoned our neighbor and asked her to inform me of the whereabouts of my precious communications appendage.
Which my dear neighbor did, with much laughter and chatter on both our parts. And that has been my sole contact with the outside world for the entire day. Bliss.
